How Harper Lee makes Mayella Ewell a Vulnerable yet Contemptible Character in To Kill a Mockingbird :: To Kill a Mockingbird Essays

It is Mayellas deceit that brings Tom Robinson to exam. Though she may not be forgiven for this lie, Atticus and Scout feel sympathy for her because of the knockout poverty in which she lives. Whenever Scout feels sorry for Mayella we do as well as we are viewing the trial from her point of view. When Tom Robinson?s trial begins, evidence begins to show that Tom Robinson is actually innocent. When Mr Ewell takes the stand we see that he is not a soft hearted person because he is blaming Tom Robinson for something that he has not done,?I seen that nigger yonder ruttin? on my Mayella?This shows a man?s racism and inhumanity towards another man. Tom Robinson hasn?t done the community all wrong but is a social outcast for universe black which is not his fault. We also learn a bit about Mr Ewell. Lee states preceding on,?The varmints had a lean of it, for the Ewell?s gave the dump through gleaning every day?This suggests that the Ewells live of the town?s dump which isn?t a very stro ng way of living, but then again Mr Ewell is an unemployed alcoholic. As we are told earlier, ?No public health officer could free them from congenital defeats, various worms and diseases natural to filthy surroundings?Mr Ewell is a terrible father due to his abusiveness and neglect. He doesn?t deal for or look after his children and so Mayella, his eldest daughter, has to post out his job.?Nobody was quite sure ho many children were on the place. Some people said six, others said nine?With lots of children to take care of Mayella was only able to get two to three years of education and she had no friends. This is why when Atticus asks her about her friends she thinks he is making fun of her. after having to live a life like this we don?t know why Mayella would like to defend her hard-hearted father, but she probably did this because she was scared of what he would do to her if she told the truth. We feel sympathetic towards her at this point but there is still a sense of hatred towards her as she is letting an innocent person being jailed who actually helped her a lot when no one did. Atticus questions Mayella very differently compared to the way he questions Bob Ewell. Through Atticus? phraseology we learn that he does sympathise with Mayella and he does realise she is a victim of her father?

philosophy Before I poopister go on to lay out the foundations of my belief system, I think it would be helpful to befuddle some light on the playing field in which these ideas are to be considered. This playing field is constructed of voice communication and statements, of course, but the precise meaning of "words" and "statements" is often left unclear. I exit begin by defining these things as I intend to use them. I will also shake a cursory attempt to explain the different types of statements we will encounter, the importance of falsifiablity and the role of faith, in addition to a smattering of other definitions that will sound important as we proceed. Statements The ultimate building blocks of any philosophical system are statements. A statement is an attempt to communicate that which is true (or perceived to be true) through the tokenic code (words) of a language. All symbols are, of course, inherently limited. There exist various properties in a symbo ls intent of reference, which cannot be contained within the symbol itself. An obvious example of this is the property of real existence. We may discuss in detail the various properties of a horse and of a unicorn. Considered only from a linguistic standpoint, a horse and unicorn can be assumed to be virtually synonymous. However, the object of the symbol horse possesses the property of real existence while the object of the symbol unicorn does not. The word/symbol horse, though, cannot convey this property because it cannot be contained by the symbol. True knowledge of this property can only be obtained by decision a real horse and touching it, riding it, getting to know it. The consequence of this is the understanding that there exist incommunicable properties of all real objects. These incommunicable properties are no less real than their communicable counterparts. They simply cannot be conveyed by symbols. Knowledge of these properties can only be obtained by direct experience with the object itself. These properties will hereafter be referred to as existential properties. Please note, however, that acknowledgment of such existential properties does not negate the reality or real importance of those properties, which can be contained and conveyed by the objects symbol. All real objects contain both communicable and existential properties and to disparage consideration of either category is to limit the degree to which we can understand the nature of such objects.
