Long Day’s Journey Into Night
In Eugene ONeills command A Long Days go into Night, the main protagonist, bloody shame Tyrone, functions as an instrument of suffering of others. Her sons Jamie and Edmund both suffer internal tragedies that could easily be blamed on her. Like her sons, her husband Tyrone faces his own internal conflicts, some of which are because of Mary. Mary Tyrone is a recovering addict who has an extremely hard time admitting her problem and is sometimes in denial slightly her problem. Her denial is a huge factor in the suffering that her sons and husband have.Jamie, Marys eldest son, is an alcoholic that undermines his buddy. In the primitively half of the play the reader learns from Tyrone that Jamie hates Edmund and is extremely jealous and angry towards him. This becomes evident later on the in the play when Jamie tells Edmund how he feels using terms such as mommas baby and Papas pet (167), showing the reader his envious feelings. Jamie is jealous towards Edmund and resents the fact that he was ever born. Because all of Jamies green-eyed monster is collectible to Edmunds birth, the true blame and jealousy is toward Mary for giving birth to Edmund.Jamie knows, as well as Mary, knows that the reason for Edmunds birth was due to the loss of her second son Eugene. After Eugene died Mary felt lost and empty and decided to give birth to a third child, Edmund, in hopes of dower her cope with the loss of her second son. Knowing this adds to Jamies jealousy towards Edmund and his bitterness towards his mother. Not only is Jamie angry at his mother for having Edmund, he is angry at her for being in denial of her problem. He knows that his mother is a morphine addict but cannot accept the fact that she wont admit she is ski binding into her habit. Her colony causes his addiction. Jamies anger towards his mothers obsession causes him to drink. The more Mary denies her action the more Jamie drinks. Although he is aware of her addiction, he tries cover for her by devis ing up little excuses to her whereabouts and or her physical appearance. Edmund, like Jamie, is also aware of his mothers morphine addiction but makes excuses of Marys actions and appearances to his brother and father. Both Edmund and Jamie hope that by covering for their addicted mother, they will be able to salvage what is left of their broken family. During the play Edmund learns that he has consumption or tuberculosis. This fashion that he will have to spend up to one year in a sanitarium. After it is learned that Edmund got consumption when he went to foreign lands earlier in life to escape the troubles of his family, it is easy to blame Mary Tyrone for his illness. There would have been no reason for Edmund to escape his family if his mother was not addicted to morphine. If Mary wasnt an addict than it is highly probable that Tyrone and Jamie would not be alcoholics and Edmund would not be ill and an alcoholic-in-training. After Edmund is diagnosed with consumption, the family must decide on which sanitarium to aim him to. Mary and Jamie try to say that Edmunds consumption is due to the previous sanitariums that Edmunds cheap father Tyrone decided upon. However, Tyrones being cheap is not to blame for Edmunds illness, his mother is.Mary Tyrone brings about the suffering of her sons and husband through her own morphine addiction. Her addiction contributes immensely to Tyrones and Jamies alcoholism as well as Edmunds illness. Their sufferings allow for this play to be a tragedy and for the reader to establish the theme that family-dynamics can hold us back if someone cannot take personal responsibility and move on. Mary Tyrone is a tragic figure in the tragedy A Long Days Journey into Night who functions as an instrument of the suffering of others.

How does Chaucerââ¬â¢s portrait of Alison add to the interest of the poem? Essay
Alison is married to the carpenter. The carpenter is the total opposite of Alison. He is old and it is likely that she finds him dull and unattractive, which explains why she has an affair. The Carpenter realises that she is non that much in have intercourse with him, and is jealous as a emergence of it, Jalous he was, and held hir narrwe in cage. There is a sense of doom for John the Carpenter. It seems too good to be true that an old man like him should have such a beautiful wife. It is obvious something is passing to happen to take her from him.In the description of Alison, Chaucer shows the difference between Alison and the carpenter. We know the carpenter is old, entirely the ceaseless portrayal of Alison makes us more than convinced with every line that the two are note suited. She was vicious and young and he was old. She is obviously very attractive, she presents herself well and she is youthful. We know that if Alison had any choice then she would not be married to this old carpenter, hardly back then, marriages were often arranged. The second man in passionateness with Alison is hende Nicholas. Nicholas is a student of astronomy, who is lodging at the Carpenters inn.Nicholas is overly young and much more suited to Alison that the Carpenter is. He declares his love for Alison in a way that is not too schematic, And prively he caught her by the quaint. This is not a very romantic way to court someone. You would not expect Alison to accept, but after much persistence from Nicholas, Lemmen, love me all atones or I wol dien she agrees to meet with him. Alison warns him it must be a great secret Ye moste been full derne as in this cas, and Nicholas swears he will not govern a word. This is not the type of love in stories like the Knights Tale. They are simply attracted to each other, making it closer to lust than love. There is a lot of description of Absolon, the parish clerk who is also in love with Alison. The description is a very femi nine one, describing his fancy clothes His rode was red bowl was his hair. Chaucer seems to be mocking Absolon, making fun of his ways, and embarrassing him in the end. By mocking Absolon, Chaucer is mocking courtly love as Absolon represents this. He goes to Alisons window every night and sings to her and reads her his poems, but every magazine he is rejected.Alison does not treat Absolon very well either. Absolon is a very jolly and gay character, but he is miserable and woebegone when Alison does not return his feelings. He sings to her and sends her cake and spices, but still Alison has no love for Absolon. He nhadde for his labour but a scorn After all the change by reversal he puts in to get Alison to fall in love with him, he is scorned. At the end of the story, twain Alison and Nicholas at laughing at Absolon after the cruel trick they play on him. There is a lot of humour in the Millers Tale. This is to be expected from the description of the Miller in the general prolo gue, as it tells us he is fond of dirty stories and jokes. Love that is not returned can forever be made humorous in such stories. We laugh at the carpenter because he real thinks that a beautiful young girl like Alison would be in love with him. She makes a gull out of the carpenter in two ways. The first being her affair with Nicholas, which shows us she does not love him, even though he is very much in love with her, This Carpenter had wedded a new wif, Which that he loved more than his lif.

The Present Government Is Planning to Increase Compulsory Education to Age 18. Why Is Such a Measure Necessary? What Are the Reasons for the State to Implement Such a Law?
The present establishment is planning to augment irresponsible education to age 18. Why is such(prenominal) a measure necessary? What are the actors for the acres to implement such a faithfulness? The proposed policy of changing compulsory culture from 16 to 18 clearly shows the giving medications vision in how to they int completion take a stronghold grip on saving and its problems. Governments aims switch always been to raise attainment for all children and to close the gap amongst the richest and the poorest (Lemieux, 2006 ).From the late seventies to 1991 the disposable income of the top quintile group adjoind form 26 to 42 percent, whilst the bottom quintile group spend from 10 to 7 percent (www. statistics. gov. uk), and this has increased further in current times. A possible discernment for this increased inequality is the shifts in industry from non- accomplished workers to skilled workers over the past 20 years, and educational systems failures to impinge on t hese changes.Raising education thusly would alleviate create the supply of comminute that industries demand, and help increase economic growth and GDP both vital requirements in order for the country to come out of the recession, which is an inherent part in all government policy. With record levels of un concern, it is without doubt that this proposed policy intends to tar stool and reduce the unemployment rate, specially amongst newborn individuals, as to a greater extent(prenominal) education melts to better job opportunities in the future. change magnitude education requirements would therefore theoretically solve the problem of increasing military press by economists to cut costs and solve the ever-growing dependence of numerous on eudaimonia. It is chief(prenominal) to first define the world capital theory as it plays an intact part in the following specifys. Human capital theory is that the more(prenominal) educated and individual, the greater earning effectiv eness for that individual as he/she is more productive due to the skills they have attained. Belfields definition of human capital is the most commonly accepted as an individuals embodied skills above their raw ability (Belfield, 2000 17). ground on this idea, raising the cultivation age to 18 would therefore make young students curb more skills, becoming skilled and more productive leading to greater job prospects and greater fee potential. In the huge run this would lead to increased consumption, exact dependence on welfare due to less unemployment, increase GDP and help boost the economy out of recession. The proposed policy is necessary because it directly tackles younker unemployment that is crippling the current economy. With youthful figures stating that as of September 2010, 2. 45 million people are out of work (www. bc. co. uk), it is important the government aims to reduce this to help boost the economy, and improve national morale. By increasing the schooling age , the government hopes to solve the increasing telephone number of young people unemployed. NEET is a government term that shows the number of people non in education, employment, or training. Recent figures show that 183,000, 9. 2% of young people vul footized 16-18 in England were NEET at end of 2009 (www. publications. parliament. uk). It is an alarming figure as it is one of the worst in the OECD countries, and demand to be tackled. This is because being NEET at a young age is associated with negative outcomes in later life, apiece having a cost not just for the individual but also for the economy as a whole (www. publications. parliament. uk). By implementing the proposed policy, this figure of 9. 2% of 16-18 year olds being NEET would be eradicated, and improve their chances of finding employment after leaving school. Greater human capital, revised outlook on goals and better decision-making are the contribute of more education, and as a result, in the long run, unemploym ent would fall, and there would be less strain on the welfare system. However, such a legal philosophyfulness is only effective if it helps meet the needs of the labour grocery. boil market patterns and trends have played an important role in the decision to implement the proposed policy. Over recent years there have been shifts in relative labour demand that have favoured skilled workers (Machin & van Reefen). The 1980s saw radical developments in technology and is often referred to as the information age. Computers, mature machinery, and other technical change has had a clear effect of increasing the relative demand for skilled workers (M & train R).This intuitively has led to a decrease in demand for non/semi-skilled workers in the labour market. This phenomenon is compound by the globalisation of many industries, and the membership of the EU, leading to many industries using utility(a) cheap labour in other countries increased foreign competition has damaged the position of less skilled workers (M & Van R). Hough put forward the argument that the education system and its role is often far from what the industry requires (Hough, 1987 15).Although this was not directly to do with the school leaving age, it is tranquil relevant in this argument because it is clear that nowadays skilled labour is what industry requires, and by increasing the schooling age to 18, the education system would help create more skilled workers through greater human capital accumulation and allocative efficiency, leading them to be more adaptable to work in such skilled professions. Therefore the increasing of the compulsory schooling age could be used to reduce unemployment rates. This is because labour supply of youths would meet the requirements of labour demand, something that hasnt been the plate over past years. This in turn would increase productivity and output, and help boost the economy, which is another important government aim. Therefore the proposed law can be seen as a way of tackling unemployment. Industries have been halting by the recession, and the economy is growing at a very slow rate. By making young individuals more educated, it is widely accepted that this would lead to increased productivity and greater economic growth. It is based on the assumption of human capital theory more education leads to increased productivity levels. Therefore by feeding the labour market with more skilled individuals (which is what the market demands), productivity and output within industries would increase. As the policy would increase education levels, wage levels will rise as individuals who pre-policy execution of instrument would reach semi-skilled work, enter more skilled professions, leading to an increase in national income. With more skilled labour incoming the labour force, industries will be able to undertake more skilled/capital intensive practices as they now have more able workers to carry out such operations. This leads on from the previous point, as productivity will increase as well as output. In the long run this would lead to increased consumption therefore the economy will grow. By increasing the schooling age to 18, the government are taking a direct approach to stimulate economic growth in the long run and increase output.Since the introduction of new labour in 1997, recent governments have constantly well-tried to reduce inequality in society to close the gap between the richest and the poorest (Lemieux, 2006 ). Inequality in struggle have risen dramatically in the UK over the past 20 years, with wage growth more evident at the upper tail of the distribution (Slemrod, 1996 99). The increasing of the schooling age can be seen as another instrument in solving this. It can be linked to the previous point of meeting the demands of the labour market. It is often the case that when a child leaves school at 16, the opportunities for that individual to obtain high earnings are very limited, as they do not hav e the skills to compete with more educated individuals and therefore are often limited to low paid, non/semi-skilled professions. Hence by increasing compulsory schooling age to 18, individuals who would normally find themselves at the lower tail of the wage distribution would have potential increased earnings due to the more human capital accumulated, and reduce the gap between the two ends of the wage distribution.A counter argument to this is similar to the problem induced by the implementation of the minimum wage in affecting wage distribution with the wages of the those at the top end of the distribution also increasing. As a result inequality would be unaffected. Having said that, the fact that earnings prospects for young individuals would be greatly enhanced by the policy, shows that cut back inequality in the sense of bettering individuals stock(a) of living, shows that this proposed policy would still be very effective in tackling the issue. The government is under great pressure to reduce the welfare state in order to help reduce the huge deficit of the country. The welfare system used to be a safety net for individuals, but unfortunately has now dark into a fishing net with many abusing it. Increasing the compulsory schooling age to 18 could be seen as a way to reduce the potential dependence people could have on welfare. By allowing students to develop their skills and have greater human capital, the prospects of them finding employment are that much greater, therefore reducing the possibility of unemployment and hence claiming off the state. One of the biggest strains on the state is teen pregnancy as it can lead to a vicious cycle of future offspring going through the same heed of life. Teen fertility is driven by immediate thinking-efforts (Oreopoulous) and poor decision making that is the result of little education. Conception rates for England was 40. 5 per 1000 girls aged 15-17 in 2010 (www. dcsg. gov. uk), which although is down on previo us figures, is still regarded as to high by government officials.Oreopoulous states that education leads to better decision-making and eradicates the present orientated preferences of individuals (Oreopoulous, year ). Increasing the schooling age by two years therefore can only be a positive step in trying to reduce teen fertility, and hence reduce the strain on the welfare state and as a result can be shown to be another reason why the government are opting for such a policy. Finally, one must discuss the alternative approaches that the government could have taken instead of increasing the school leaving age. ALMPs are a government neb used to raise output and welfare and reallocate labour between sub-markets (Boeri & Ours, 2008 261)). However, it is viable to say those ALMPs such as training and activation programmes will be used in conjunction with the new law therefore strengthening the possible success of the proposed law further in tackling the problems of the labour market.A fter analyzing and evaluating the proposed law of raising the school leaving age, I have come to conclude that the government have matt-up that such a measure would tackle youth unemployment, help create the supply that labour markets demand, increase production and output leading to economic growth, reduce wage and social inequalities, and reduce the dependence many might have on welfare. All these points help build towards the bigger picture the government has to get the country on the right path to get out of the recession. It is a law that will collect rewards in the long run and will make inroads into changing the careless and unambitious culture of nowadayss youth. The law will be more beneficial to the country if it is worked in conjunction with alternative labour market policies such as training, and activation policies that will help those who leave school at 18 unemployed. It can be seen in broader aspects boosting the countrys moral and self belief and help Britains labo ur market and industry compete greater internationally. In my opinion is it is a necessary measure, and such a law will go a long way in helping stabalise and boost the economy.Bibliography Belfield, Clive R. Economic Principles of Education. It doesnt need witnesses because of the idea that a Witch sack up unconsciously call forth her spirit to harm someone. 5) Proctor confesses lechery because it would portray Abigail as a lady of pleasure and he conceptualises that Daneforth and Hathorne will know that he wouldnt ruin his good name.Daneforth and Hathorne dont believe him though because its his word against Abigails. 6) Elizabeth tells the court that she didnt throw out Abigail for a harlot but she only says this because she doesnt want to ruin Proctors name but this is an unfair test because its a natural lie to tell. 7) Abigail turns the court against Marry Warren by mimicking all that Mary says as to shew it look like her Phantom is controlling them and then Abigail and the other girls all pretend to run off in fear from Marry Warrens Phantom. 8) Hale denounces the proceedings because he believes them to be unjust and that there be no witches in Salem.
